March 27, 1996 FOR RELEASE: Immediately CONTACT: Susan Harlow HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS SHINE IN ANNUAL MATH EXAM Seventeen students were winners in the annual American High School Mathematics Examination held last month around Vermont. The purpose of the examination is to identify and encourage students with an interest in and talent for mathematical problem solving. The highest-scoring student from each school received a pin or medal. Jan Johansson of the University of Vermont Department of Mathematics and Statistics was the Vermont examination coordinator. The winners at each high school were: Jason Lestage - Colchester High School, Benjamin Morse - Essex Junction Education Center Steven McDonald and David Oleszkiewicz - South Burlington High School Andrew Skelton - Burlington High School Jerry Thibault - Mt. Mansfield Union High School Stevenson Waltien - Champlain Valley Union High School Garrett Alston - Williamstown Junior-Senior High School Benjamin Partlow - Black River High School David Raymond - Leland & Gray Union High School Laura Lucas - North Country Union High School Jennifer Bachelder - Hartford High School Joshua Otis - Woodstock Union High School Craig Jewell - Springfield High School Wells Chandler - U-32 High School Evan Paul - Canaan Memorial High School Danielle Delisle - Danville High School Katie Bemis - Whitingham High School Morse, McDonald, Raymond, Otis, Skelton, Jewell, Thibault, Alston and Oleszkiewicz were among students who did especially well and will be invited to participate in further competitions; they may be invited to become members of the U.S. team in the International Mathematics Olympiad. -30-
